Verse 6 of Proverbs chapter 14 states that “A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.”  It is one of the great curiosities, and one could also say tragedies, of human nature that men have often come into a position in which they could gain real knowledge if not for their own pride.  Herod had a great opportunity, and Luke 23:8 tells us that he was even glad when he saw Jesus, “for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.” But instead he treated Him with contempt and mocked him.  He could have had answers to all that matters, but he came away with nothing.  One could also point to some of those at the Areopagus on the occasion of Paul’s address in Acts 17:16-28.

Those who insist on leaning upon their own understanding risk being doomed to the same fate as any fool.  Jesus, speaking of his parables in Matthew 13, quoting Isaiah 6:9-10 said “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.”

Psalm 119:33-40; Psalm 14 – The Fool Says, There Is No God

heiToday’s reading of Psalm 119 is brought to you by the 5th letter of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet, “He” or “Hei.”   The numeric value is of course, five. The pictograph for Hey looks like a man with his arms raised ().  The meaning of the name “Hey” is “look,” or “behold!”

This stanza, or strophe, brings to us a thought which stands apart from the other eight verses – verse 37 “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things,” which points to the lust of the eyes that has been the ruin of men (and women) for all time.  Proverbs 23:31 warns of looking at wine “when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.”  Isaiah 33:15 reminds that a righteous man “shuts his eyes from looking on evil.”

Verse 36 is cited in  1 Kings 8:58, where Solomon gives his benediction prior to sacrifice before the new temple, and verse 38 may well be pointing to the Davidic promise of 2 Samuel 7:25.

Psalm 14 is almost identical to Psalm 53, and is a “wisdom” psalm in every sense of the word.  The way of the fool, who today would term himself an atheist, is what Coffman referred to when he wrote of the “judicial hardening of man.” What happens when men are hardened? (1) They are blinded (2 Corinthians 4:4), meaning that they are incapable of seeing or understanding the plainest truth. (2) ‘Their foolish heart (the scriptural heart is the mind) is darkened (Romans 1:21), with the meaning that an essential element of human intelligence has been judiciously removed by God Himself. (3) They become vain in their reasonings (Romans 1:21). (4) They become fools (Romans 1:22), and (5) God gives them up (Romans 1:22,26,28).

How do we know the Bible is God’s Word?

The following illustration of memory technique for this subject has been attributed to the “Stand to Reason” folks, e.g. Greg Koukl.  We’re not sure this is exactly correct, as the pretext has been passed around for many years, but we’re happy to make that attribution nonetheless.

handIf you are reading this blog, the chances are that you already believe that the Bible is the word of God.  But what about those times when the subject comes up with our friends and acquaintances that aren’t so convinced?  We know from 2 Timothy 2:16 that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” But the world is full of people who believe the Bible is little more than myths and fairy tales.

And rarely do we carry around for ready recollection a list of convincing arguments or evidences for what we ourselves know to be the truth of the matter.  And it’s true also that we are not likely to be able to do that even with the following memory aids.  But we should be prepared (1 Peter 3:15)  to present some general truths for which we can later provide examples in evidence in a meaningful manner; and it’s as plain as the hand in front of our face.

pinkySo let’s start with the pinkie.  When you think of this digit, thing “P” for prophecy.  The Bible has many examples of fulfilled prophecy.  And none other than Moses gave us the measure of how easy it is to know true prophecy (Deuteronomy 18:22).  How about some examples of those?  Take Daniel chapter 8, which was written around 550 B.C and accurately predicted the rise of several empires to Belshazzar in interpretation of his dream.  Validated as far as time goes by the historian Josephus, this prophecy predicted even the rise of Alexander the Great.  For an expanded dissertation, please see this article at ApologeticsPress.org.  Here’s more.  Read about Ezekiel’s stunningly accurate prediction of the fate of the city of Tyre in this article.  Here is an aerial photo of the site taken by the French military in 1934.800px-Tyre-aerial-photo-by-France-Military-1934  This aerial view of Tyre vividly shows the land bridge that Alexander the Great created. Then there’s Isaiah’s prediction written almost two hundred years in advance of Cyrus’ conquest of Babylon (539 B.C.) –  “The Prophecy of Cyrus.”

ring_fingerNext, we take the ring finger.  This represents the unity of the Scriptures.  Written over the course of thousands of years with diverse authorship, and in a variety of writing conditions such as battlefields, dungeons, prisons and caves, all showing pieces of the same puzzle and still when assembled together they all tell the same story of God’s plan for the salvation of mankind – none of which was fully even known by all of the authors.  Kings, tax collectors, physicians, servants, shepherds, and warriors were all guided by the Spirit of the Lord to record His word in amazing unity. A substantial portion of the new Testament was even written by Saul of Tarsus, who before his conversion, was known to have hated the Lord Jesus so much at one time, that he was responsible for the persecution and cruel murders of many of his disciples. It is impossible for anyone to truly read and study this entire book (for it is one book, in the end) in honesty of heart and open-mindedness without realizing that this cannot be the work of mere men.

big fingerLet’s not skip the big finger.  The Bible has the answers to the important epistemological, moral, ethical, and scientific questions of our age and any age.  No other religion and no other collection of writings can provide the answers to the big questions that have been on the minds of philosophers, educators, kings and yes, even clergy throughout the ages in the way that the Bible clearly reasons.  Genesis provides the answers to the great questions of where the universe came from, how man fits into that universe, how things such as love beauty, laws of logic and other universals are possible.

What makes something right or wrong?  Is it the mere acceptance of society concerning moral absolutes.  If so, why should one society’s view of those morality or right and wrong over truly that of another – like say that of Nazi Germany? The Bible gives us the answers to these and other truths, such as uniformity of nature.  We fully expect that scientific experiments can be repeated with accuracy because we know that certain physical things occur with expected results.  But what gives us the reason to know and believe that this will continue to be the case?  Our creator gives us the answers, as he has promised to “hold things together” (Colossians 1:17).  And why do we recognize human dignity, have funerals, etc? Could it be because we recognize that man was indeed created in God’s image?  To paraphrase the late Dr. Greg Bahnsen, without the Christian world view, whether you acknowledge it or not, you couldn’t make sense out of anything – you cannot provide the preconditions of intelligibility.   What are laws of logic anyway, and how can an atheist account for them?  They certainly are not just the way the human brain thinks because my gray matter is not the same as yours.  And if one claims that they are conventions, then I should be able to claim my own conventions, and be just as logical.

pointerNext we have the index of the pointer finger that points the way to history, archaeology, and even scientific fore-knowledge (see  this article for that information).  Even scientists and archaeologists who do not believe the Bible is the word of God consult it when they want to know where to dig, and it proves itself historically time after time.  Just type in “archaeology” in the search box on this page, and you will be rewarded with one example after another of this truth.  If it is written in the Bible, and it is possible to validate or invalidate what is written, the bible has always been proven correct.  The Bible is the only book that can look to historical evidence to support its unique theological claims.  The New Testament documents are the best historical documents of the ancient world when approached using the standard cannons of historical research untainted by naturalistic presuppositions.  Time and again even in recent decades, the Bible has been proven correct in such controversies as who Pilate actually was, whether he actually lived and what his title actually had been – and much more.

thumb2Next, we move on to the thumb.  In olden times, an emperor would give a thumb up or thumb down to spare or condemn a man.  The Bible has the power to change lives no other medium, and no other way of life.  Those life changes do not occur because of something we’ve done.  God changes us in a way we never could change ourselves when we obey the Scriptures.  This experience is universal, is the same everywhere in the world in which it is taught. It transcends all economic, ethnic, and even geographical boundaries.

Finally, we have the fist.  The Bible is from God, who fights for us (the name of Israel actually translates “God fights”).  He has protected His word for centuries.  There are no “lost books” of the Bible.  We have copies today that are older even than those we had 100 years ago, and there are no substantive differences in any of them.    How does it compare with other historical manuscripts?  The works of Plato, for example, written 427-347 B.C . The earliest copy we have today is about 900 A.D. Tacitus wrote around 100 A.D, and the earliest copy is about 1100 A.D. Only about 20 manuscripts exist.  Homer’s “Iliad” was written about 900 B.C .  The earliest copy from about 400 B.C.  Number of manuscripts – 643.  The New Testament was written 40-100 A.D.  The earliest copy about 125 A.D.  Number of manuscripts – 24,000.  The Bible stands the test of time.

fistNo other book has been so thoroughly censored throughout the ages, yet it cannot be destroyed. Just as so-called “renowned” atheists of today disparage faith they cannot even comprehend, and make it their mission in life to destroy that faith in others, men throughout the ages have attempted to silence God’s word. Virtually all of the apostles were martyred for proclaiming the Lord Jesus crucified.  From A.D. 303-311, the Roman emperor Diocletian, during the empire’s bloodiest persecution of Christians, ordered every Bible burned, thinking he could destroy Christianity by executing anyone who was apprehended in possession of a Bible. Just 25 years later, the Roman emperor Constantine ordered that 50 perfect copies of the Bible be made at government expense, and Christianity became the empire’s officially preferred religion. The French philosopher Voltaire, a skeptic  who attempted to destroy the faith of many people boasted that within 100 years of his death, the Bible would disappear from the face of the earth. Voltaire died in 1728, but ironically, 50 years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society moved into his former house and used his printing presses to print thousands of Bibles.  William Tyndale was executed by strangulation and burned at the stake for heresy for his crime of translating the Bible from Greek to English.  Hundreds of years later, Joan Bridgman made the comment in the Contemporary Review that, “He (Tyndale) is the mainly unrecognized translator of the most influential book in the world. Although the Authorized King James Version is ostensibly the production of a learned committee of churchmen, it is mostly cribbed from Tyndale with some reworking of his translation.”

Psalms 20-21 – Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God

Psalm 20 is clearly a battle hymn for David.  The suggestion of the absence of chariots and horses points to a time before Solomon (“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God“), for when know that Solomon as king had many of both (1 Kings 10:26). Verse 8’s continuation of the characterization of verse 7 (“They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright”) is a reference to the grace of God, rather than the might of his people.

Psalm 21 is can be divided into two sections at verse 7.  The first half deals with the king’s blessings in the face of his enemies.  The second half, beginning in verse 8 describes God’s vengeance upon them, and his “destroying them” in his wrath.  Verse 13 concludes with praise to God for his strength and power.

Job’s friend Eliphaz is called a Temanite.  Teman was an important city of Edom and is referred to in Amos 1:12.  He was probably not the same Eliphaz that is mentioned in Genesis 36:15, but as the first-born of Esau, his son was himself named Teman, which is where the name for the city probably came from.

After seven days of silence, he offers his opening speech, beginning with a compliment to Job’s integrity, but quickly we see that deteriorate to the same sort of rhetoric common to the day.  Satan has already counted on Job becoming a hypocrite, and Eliphaz suggests that he has become one by way of his complaining.  His self-righteous speech must have sorely aggravated Job, as he clearly demonstrates his total misunderstanding of Job’s plight, as well as the reasons for it to be happening to a man who by all other accounts had been judged innocent by his deeds.  The conclusion then, from his point of view, can only be that Job is, in fact that hypocrite, for “who that was innocent ever perished?”

Eliphaz’s “vision” begins and ends with a tale from a point of view that God Himself will declare as folly, and was true only in the imagination of Eliphaz.  As Coffman noted: “No one could make a bigger mistake than to suppose that God really spoke to Eliphaz in a dream or vision. Commentators differ on just where the vision ends; but we accept the opinion that it was concluded only by the end of this chapter.”

Psalm 13, 16 – How Long, O Lord?

Psalm 13 is the “How long” psalm repeated four times in the first two verses; and begins with the question of how long the Lord will leave the psalmist feeling abandoned.  In the end, however, he acknowledges the grace of the Lord, and the many ways He has blessed him.  Unlike many of us, he recognizes how prosperous and happy he is.

“But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.”

Coffman’s observation was that “It is strange indeed that children of God are not exempt from such feelings of abandonment and despair, and we are left in wondering as to why it should be so. Perhaps the Lord wishes to drive us to our knees repeatedly that we should ever rely upon Him and not upon ourselves.” 

He then notes the connection this psalm has with our prayer life:

‘Prayer is not only the proper reaction of the godly to trouble, it is also the effective medicine against depression in the face of it.’

Just as the Lord has given us freedom of will to serve Him or not, he puts no hedge around us where the cares of the world are concerned (Job 1:10).  In the same vein of thought are these words accredited to Martin Luther:

‘Hope itself despairs, and despair yet hopes, and only that unspeakable groaning is audible with which the Holy Spirit, who moves over the waters covered with darkness, intercedes for us.

Psalm 16 is unquestionably Messianic in nature, and Peter cites it as such in Acts 2:25-28 and in verse 31, he identifies it his sermon as such.  Paul cited the 10th verse as well when he preached the resurrection of Jesus to the people of Antioch of Pisidia in Acts 13:35.  The presence of the Lord at the psalmist’s right hand is the source of his strength, then followed by the reference to the pleasures forevermore  abounding at the right hand of God.

Proverbs – On Becoming Wise

Verse 3 is the watchword verse for those of us who are prone to speak without considering; but these days, to email or post on Facebook fits just as well in our world.  It is much too easy for us to “say” something to someone electronically that we would NEVER speak aloud to someone in person.  Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.  Today, it is easy to bring relationships to ruin by opening wide our keyboards.  Perhaps the eleventh commandment should be “Thou shalt not click the ‘Send’ button for 24 hours, then read aloud first.”  The twelfth should certainly be “Thou shalt not click ‘Reply All.'”

reply allVerse 20’s advice is just as easily understood as it is less often heeded:

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,
but the companion of fools will suffer harm
.”

Or as Paul told the Corinthians in 15:33, “‘Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.’”  Adam Clarke said “To walk with a person implies love and attachment; and it is impossible not to imitate those we love. So we say, “Show me his company, and I’ll tell you the man.” Let me know the company he keeps, and I shall easily guess his moral character.”

Gill explained it saying that “(he who walks with the wise) converses frequently with them in private about spiritual and experimental things, and walks with them in public in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord; he by those means grows wiser and wiser, gains a large stock of spiritual knowledge and experience…”  By the same token, the foolish companions will often precede their foolish ideas with a reminder that speaks for itself – “nobody will ever know…”  God does.

Psalm 119:25-32; Psalm 12 – Among the Children of Man

Verses 25-32 of Psalm 119 are brought to you by the fourth letter of the letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Daleth.  The psalmist admits that his soul – who he is – clings to the dust from which he was made (verse 25) ; but he implores God to teach him the truth of His righteous commandments, so that he will cling to Him, enlarging our hearts is akin to enlarging breadth of hour minds (1 Kings 4:29, 2 Corinthians 6:11, 13).

Psalm 12 is a chiasmus, as the first and last verses contain the phrase “the sons of man” (or in some versions, “the children of man”) in a parallel structure. In the former, the faithful have vanished from among them.  In the latter, vile wickedness is exalted among them.  This A-B-B-A  structure can be observed in Psalm 2, 10, and 11 as well.  The call for the cutting off of lying and boastful lips is a reference to those who believe they are lord over the needy and the poor.  But God is the great almighty and as Isaiah in 33:10 foretells, (because of their groaning) “Now I will arise,” says the Lord, now I will lift myself up; now I will be exalted.”

Psalm 10 is often considered to be an acrostic continuation of Psalm 9, and differences aside there is some merit in that view beginning with the fact that the psalmist in chapter 10 recounts the deeds of the wicked and speaks of his denial of God (verse 4) in the third person.  And he reminds us that the wicked who oppress the poor will “be caught in the schemes that they have devised”. – always an abomination to the Lord.  God has always cared deeply about the poor (Micah 6:9-11, Leviticus 19:9-11).

It is not the psalmist himself that believes the wicked will continue to prosper forever, nor that God himself does not know , for he says of their attitude in verse 11 “He says in his heart, ‘God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.'”.

But God does see and he will mete out his vengeance one day, just as HE has before in His own time”

 “O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,
so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.”

Job 3 – Whatever I dread befalls me

Job finally breaks the silence of the last week as it would seem he can no longer bear it.    We have no way of knowing what has been going through his mind in the last week, but surely he has been tempted to turn his anger toward God.  Still, he does not sin and curse God, as God  in His wisdom already knew he would not.  True enough that he did greatly lament his own birth, but even the great prophet Jeremiah did so (Jeremiah 20:14-18) in his sorrow over his persecution.

Still, it is all too easy for us to be tempted to judge Job and others, for who among us has not himself suffered?  And is our suffering not just as severe for us at times?  When we have been hurt, do we cry out and long for death?  If we do not, does that make our grief and pain less significant?

We all do suffer – some more than others – at times, and if we are truthful, as great as our pain may be; and as bad as it may get for many of us, it is doubtful that we go through the degree of anguish and pain that Job has already experienced in the first two chapters of this book.

But who is anyone else to judge this, and what yardstick will they use to do so?  That of what we read of Job – or (more likely) their own?  We will get to know Job’s friends much better in the coming days, but if you cut through all of the criticism that we and others direct at those friends (and truly they will show their own flaws as well), we should not lose sight of the fact that they came and stayed with Job when he was at his lowest, spoke not a word until he spoke, and only now will speak as they believe they may be able to help him understand why these terrible things have happened to him – as well how he might “fix it.”

Our desire to think of ourselves as compassionate, and “being there” for our friends as Job’s three friends are there is admirable, but we must not presume to “know how they feel.”  No matter how seemingly large or small the trial or pain, no two people handle grief, depression, or pain in the same way.  All Job knows, is that when all that he has lost began to go wrong, it just kept coming!  And his worst fears and dreads became realized again and again (verse 25-26):

“For the thing that I fear comes upon me,
and what I dread befalls me.
I am not at ease, nor am I quiet;
I have no rest, but trouble comes.”

Re: Job 2:10 “In all this Job did not sin with his lips.”  He epitomized Jesus’ words; and with of all their faults, Job’s friends did show compassion, for as much as he still obeyed Matthew 22:37 (cited from Deuteronomy 6:5), they demonstrated their love for him as in Matthew 22:39: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
